Friday I hung out with the Boston kids, Caitlin, Becca, and Sarah. :D
Sarah talked Jonathan into being Peter so we could complete our Marauder set. And Elizabeth, Jenny, and Al were all in my house playing Guitar Hero when Sarah and I reached home. After running around frantically and making last minute costume things--stapling antlers for Elizabeth, pinning on my tail, drawing whiskers on Jonathan, and finding the dog ears for Sarah--we found ourselves in a ginormous pack of people in Davis-Kidd. Entered the costume contest and Derek, not breaking from his Hagrid-ness for a second, asked us if we hadn't all been Metalocalypse characters. LAWLZ. Btws, the people who won for our division were this amazing Lily and James couple complete with baby Harry. ADORABLE.
Stood/sat in line. Got book. RAN AWAY.
Pictures? I think so. A lot of them are pretty gay. Plz excuse.

Sarah stayed at my house for the next five days, reading the book out loud. We read slowly, mostly because we had to stop and talk all the time, but also because we dreaded what would happen to people and because we really didn't want Harry Potter to be over. It was really a good way to read the last book as the series really has been a big deal for both of us all throughout junior high and high school.

Here be spoilers, yo.

I guess all this comes from beyond the grave, since I slit my throat with the last page of the book like I said I'd do if Remus died. I expected it, but hoped for the best. I'm glad he lived up to the angsty, alcoholic bitch I always knew he could be. His relationship with Tonks was really weird, and I got the impression that it wasn't that he was just worried about her and their kid, but that, despite really caring about her, he wasn't as happy with her as he had thought he would be. But the baby really made him happy, and Remus Lupin cannot be happy, so he had to die. Thanks, JK. I found his death to be as anti-climactic as I had expected, which was depressing. I thought maybe Tonks would live, but whatever, Andromeda can just raise her dead daughter's son all alone now that Ted's dead. THANKS. Really, Remus just missed his dead boyfriend too much and had to go be gay in the afterlife.

I liked the book, don't get me wrong. It was open, yet conclusive and I didn't feel the emptiness from being unsatisfied and sad from waste of potential, like with the end of Firefly. Still, it seemed like a bunch of mundane but well written story with bursts of amazing awesomeness every so often. As far as the whole backdrop for the story went, sometimes it seemed like a war was going on, other times it seemed like Bellatrix and Voldemort were causing trouble while Rookwood, Yaxley, and the Malfoys ponced around incompetently. Lackluster poncing does not equal war. I wanted more Death Eater-ness, but whatevs. And where was Rudolphus? Doing his hair with his brother the entire time? And Mcnair? Boo. Also, epilogue=bad fanfiction? Aside from the comment about Sevvy being the bravest man Harry knew (awesome), the whole thing was okay, but ...qua? Finally, I wanted Voldie to realize that Regulus had fucked him over and him to make "YOU TWAT." face about it. D: (HEDWIG! T_T)
At any rate, I had a three main problems which I'll address before the badassery.

I. Deathly Hallows
Um, so, I feel like they were just stuck in there to have Harry get all side tracked from the horcruxes. Voldie didn't know about them, so it's not like it was a race against him, and Harry didn't use them to be master of death. I really felt like it was a BUST. I expected him to have to be killed because he was a horcrux, then have all the Death Eaters be all "HEZ DED!", and Harry be all "IM TEH MASTA OF DEATH!" because he's the true master of the Elderwand and has the other two Hallows, and finally beat Voldemort bad-ass style. Instead Harry dying was like the end of the second season of Xena. It's not your timeblah blah blah. Whatever. The Hallows ultimately seemed nearly unnecessary. D:

II. Wasted Potential
Some of the characters did not, in my opinion, live up to their potential, the primary one being Draco. I didn't think he'd go all good in the end, but I certainly thought he'd do something more productive than shit his pants every time Voldemort talked to him, cry on the back of Harry's broomstick, and procreate. Scorpious? Really? I also felt like Luna got slightly short changed in the end, with out even a mention in the poncelogue. I really wish Neville had killed Bellatrix, not Molly. Fred. Um, what the fuck. Way to seriously fuck up George even more. Also, Dobby. His burial was brutal. I kinda wanted Re-re to take care of Greyback. The man only fucked up Remus's ENTIRE LIFE. I wish Tonks was more of a badass, not necessarily in this book, maybe if she hadn't spent the sixth book moping around because a guy didn't like her, she coulda done it there. She's cute, bordering on annoying, but I wish, maybe for the sake of her relationship with Remus, that she could have had the ability to take care of herself. Maybe things would have been better for them if she wasn't such a overbearing, vulnerable wench? I really liked her in OoTP, I think her character could have developed better. Character development leads me into my final point.

III. Peter
He's possibly the most overlooked character in fandom, at least in MWPP. Most people forget that Peter was once such close friends with Lily and James that they trusted him with their lives, and Sirius thought he was worthy of this trust as well (probably Remus would have too, if he'da known). They were a very tight group of friends. He pretty much had to be in Gryffindor, as the other three Marauders were, at any rate, he couldn't have been a Slytherin, I doubt James would have ever become friends with him, especially judging by his pre-disposition to hating the house in Severus's memory. I'm almost afraid JK forgot all this about him too. Peter should have died doing something that could have promised at least a bit of redemption. The way it turned out, how could he have possibly been in Gryffindor? He's a coward till the end. One moment of hesitation does not foster the redemption Peter needed. The line between Good and Evil was very strong in the end, the Malfoys really pussied out more than did anything good, no one crossed lines at all, everyone stayed on the side they'd been on since the beginning of the series (except Regulus? but we never really knew him). Peter deserved the Anakin-style final redemption. I don't believe he was always evil, and he was too frightened during his entire stint in this series to have ever been in the house he was definitely part of. He had to have been a better person deep down and some bad things must have driven him to join the Death Eaters in the 70s. Peter's demise is the most troubling thing for me in this series ultimately. I mean, Sirius's super ambiguous, super gay, super LAME death is still up there, but this trumps it. I really hate it ended like that for Peter. I feel it's the only thing JK did wrong.

Badassery:
+NEVILLE. OH. DEAR. LORD. Amazing. Possibly the best character of the series.
+Harry=The BAMF Who Lived.
+Sevvy=The Half-Blood BAMF. Seriously, he's awesome.
+Harry bursting through the window of Bathilda's house holding onto Hermione watching Voldemort yell out the window as they fell and the church bells rang in Christmas Day.
+Aberforth.
+Percy.
+KREACHER! <3
+Harry punching that guy in the face.
+Finally having Bella get called a bitch. :D
+Snape's memories.
+Regulus fucking over Voldie, drinking poison, and letting himself be eaten by magical zombies.
+Bill and Fleur's SUPER TACKY wedding ruined by Death Eaters.
+Kingsley's message "The Ministry has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming."
+Remus's bitch fit and rampant alcoholism. :D
+Sitting in the woods forever.Oh, wait. NO.
+Afterlife!Lily, James, Sirius, and Remus. :D
+Voldemort grounding the Malfoys and Bellatrix when everyone escapes. ("Mummy is very upset.")
+Most of the fight at Hogwarts.
+Sevvy shaped hole in the window. When did HP become Looney Toons?
+McGonagall getting to use her skillz.
+Finally finding some stuff out, at last. (Though not everything).

I think that's all I have to say for now. D:
This took forever to write. 0.o
I'm mostly sad it's over.
The Beatles broke up. Joseph Heller and Kurt Vonnegut are died. Now, Harry Potter's finished.
Love is over.

After we finished the book Sarah and I walked three miles on the path around the church up the street in the pouring rain. It felt pretty good.

Now that you mention it, I feel about the same way I did when Tasha died (the first time around). She was my favorite character and an utter bad ass and then got a whole bunch of lame in the end. Exactly the same with Remus. D:

And yeah, at the end I was all "WHATABOUTSEV!?" I imagine he was found later that week after Harry remembered all of a sudden.

And get some more original names, JK. I'd be fine with Albus Severus Potter, cause that's kinda cool if the other kids weren't Lily and James (which is already a tiny bit creepy).

I totally have pictures of my dressed as her when I was seven. It's what I use to prove that, yes, I have always been this geeky.

I am deeply in mourning. My life is over. To compensate, I named my new doggy Ginny because my mommy wouldn't let me name her Remus.

D: I'd come over and ponce if you weren't eight million light years away.

I think it's because, for some reason, I never let the fact that the sixth book had come out and I read it sink in and become no longer surreal that theses last two books are somehow kinda disconnected in my brain from the first five, the end of this book didn't seem Earth shattering to me. Honestly, JK lost me somewhere in the sixth book. I need to reread this one.

Or maybe this is the denial stage of grieving.

I agree that the sixth book was where I started to disconnect from HP, though I'm not sure why. I meant to reread the sixth book before I read the seventh, but I got impatient. I wonder if (aside from my dear Moony's death) the book would have had more of an impact on me if I had.

As for poncing about, we'll have plenty of time for that in a few weeks ^_^.

I think I meant to reread all of it. Maybe that's what I'll start doing right now.

Yay!

I'm glad a fair number of people agree, I was afraid I was missing something crucial.

I thought that the Deathly Hallows were necessary as fodder for Harry's development, or at least for the display thereof.
He succeeds where Dumbledore failed kinda thing.
Where was Ginny? I wanted her to play a bigger role in this one. At least give her a big scene with Harry in the aftermath; after Harry leaves the Burrow they don't talk one on one at all.

Also burn me t3h mix plz! I have almost none of that music.

Yeah, Ginny wasn't as big a character as I wanted her to be. D:

I shall burn it for you! :D
